Mike Reedy
Few men in any industry are considered "Pioneers." However, ask anyone who was around RC cars in the late 70s and every one of them will say that they knew Mike Reedy. Mike's passion for racing and kind heart endeared him to anyone he came in contact with.
As organized racing became more and more popular in the mid 80s, Mike decided to celebrate his birthday in the best way he knew how: by hosting a race. But this race would not be just any race. The top competitors from around the world were invited to compete in a unique, heads-up format that has set the standard for RC racing excitement and difficulty. 32 of the best drivers from around the world battle head-to-head in eight rounds of eight cars across four heats utilizing 2WD and 4WD buggies. As the races are completed, drivers gain points based upon finishing positions with six of the eight rounds counting towards their overall score. Unlike most racing, this format isn't necessarily about being the fastest driver, but instead knowing how to win races.
As the years passed and champions like Lett, Hirosaka, Kinwald and Pavidis were crowned, 4WD buggy fell out of favor from the world racing stage and the Reedy Race lost its luster. It was at this time that touring cars were becoming popular, so it made perfect sense to bring this exciting racing format to the onroad racing world. In 1998, the first Reedy International Touring Car Race of Champions was held at Ripon R/C Raceway in Ripon, California and it has been held on Memorial Day weekend every year since then.
On May 17, 2011 Mike Reedy lost his 10+ year battle with Parkinson's disease. Mike's legacy lives on in the lives he touched, his World Champion-powering motors and the events he created.
