Competition Rules
• ROAR technical rules govern all classes.
• All qualifying heats, main events, and Invitational races are 5 minutes in length.
• Minimum weight: 1350g.
• Maximum battery voltage: 8.40.
• Maximum battery temperature: ambient temperature plus 5° F.
• Only motors, zero-timing ESCs, and firmware currently found on ROAR's approved list are allowed in the 17.5 class. Motors must be pre-teched before they can be used in scored rounds. ESCs will be spot-checked for compliance.
• Only one fan allowed on the motor, 30mm maximum.
• Open class drivers are allowed to tech four sets of marked control tires to be used during both qualifying and the main events. Marked control tires must be used for practice seeding rounds but do not count towards a racer’s four-set allotment.
• No modifications to the control tires are allowed. However, mold seams may be removed, and tire beads may be re-glued.
• To improve the quality of the on-track action and reduce penalties for incidental contact, it is each racer's individual responsibility to prevent their own body from tucking. Aftermarket products such as Protoform's Anti-Tuck Body Stiffeners (#1721-00) are widely available. Homemade solutions such as body posts mounted to the shock tower have existed for years. Use of such devices is not mandatory. If you choose not to use them you are doing so at your own risk. Please be aware that rough driving penalties will still be handed out. If the collision warrants a penalty, the appropriate penalty will be given.
• Factory sponsored drivers (those whose travel arrangements are paid for by their sponsor and/or are paid a salary to race), or those who have finished in the A Main in the Modified class the previous year, are not eligible to compete in the Expert 17.5 class. Drivers who are sponsored or receive discounts from chassis manufacturers, or who have finished in the A or B Main in the 13.5 or Modified class in 2017, are not eligible to compete in the Sportsman 17.5 class. The race organizers reserve the right to determine the appropriate class for each driver.
• Broken vehicles may not be repaired during the race.
• Open classes qualifying will use qual points with the best two rounds used to determine main event qualifying positions. Ties will be broken by combining the laps and times from the driver's best two rounds.
• Main event results will be determined by adding a driver's best two results. Ties will be broken by adding the laps and time from the driver's best two results.
• Invitational results are determined by combining the points from a driver’s best 10 out of 12 rounds. In the event of a tie, the first tie-breaker will be determined by the most first place finishes between tied racers. Most second-place finishes will break second-level ties. Third-level ties will be broken by the most third-place finishes, and so on, until all ten scored rounds are used. In the event that a tie still exists after using the ten scored rounds, the final tie breaker will be the addition of the three best laps and times from the scored rounds regardless of the finishing positions in those three rounds. -
Motor Tech
All 17.5 motors must be teched in advance, sealed, and marked. Each driver will be allowed to tech up to three motors for use over the course of the event. Drivers can tech up to two motors initially. After each driver has run through the inspection process and teched at least one motor, a third motor may be teched.
The inspection process will begin at 11AM on Wednesday, May 3. We encourage all racers who plan to check-in on Wednesday to be prepared to have their motor(s) inspected as well. To expedite the inspection process, motors must be removed from the vehicle and disassembled before being presented to the inspector.
Once a motor has been deemed legal, it must be re-assembled in the inspection area where it will then be numbered and sealed. Please bring the appropriate tools so that you can re-assemble your motor(s) in a timely manner.
The inspection process will continue during the day on Thursday, time permitting. Be aware that only numbered and sealed motors are allowed beginning with Friday’s timed seeding rounds.
If a driver presents a car to tech with a motor that has not been numbered and sealed, he will not be allowed to participate in that run. If the infraction is discovered in post-tech, the driver will be disqualified from that run.
Any driver who tampers with a previously inspected motor will be disqualified from the event.

Manufacturers' Championship
The rules are simple: the points from the highest two placing Invitational class drivers from each chassis manufacturer are combined to determine the Manufacturers' Champion. As long as a manufacturer has at least two points-scoring drivers in the Invitational class, they are eligible to compete for this prestigious award.

Body Tucks
To improve the quality of the on-track action and reduce penalties for incidental contact, it is now each racer's individual responsibility to prevent their own body from tucking.
The fact that racers are utilizing anti-tuck devices doesn't mean open season on rear bumpers. If the collision warrants a penalty, the appropriate penalty will be given.
